The Who had a year and three months of the Tommy Tour under their belt when they played their second appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival. As they had done in 1969, they played most of their famous rock opera, which festival audiences already knew well. Huge floodlights illuminated some 600,000 spectators and attracted, as The Who's tour manager John Woolf recalls, "every moth and flying night creature on the island". The Who opened this famous concert at 2am. In August 1970, Pete Townshend included new songs in the setlist, including WATER, I DON'T EVEN KNOW MYSELF and NAKED EYE. These songs, recorded at the time of the festival, were intended for the upcoming Lifehouse project. Although Lifehouse eventually disbanded, their recording set the stage for Who's Next. The Who also played several concert stalwarts such as SUBSTITUTE, MY GENERATION, MAGIC BUS, I CAN'T EXPLAIN and the perennial covers SHAKIN' ALL OVER and SUMMERTIME BLUES.
