The Doors had squeezed several lives into the band's five years of existence, and by the end of 1970 the psychological strain of Jim Morrison's addiction and his problems with the law threatened to overwhelm the band. Any attempt to make an album under these conditions was bound to end in disaster, but on L.A. Woman - the last Doors record released during Morrison's lifetime - the band succeeded almost in spite of it. The album, which the band self-produced and recorded in a private rehearsal room, was a homecoming in both a musical and spiritual sense. "Our last record became just like our first album: raw and simple," drummer John Densmore said in his autobiography. "It was as if we had come full circle. We were once again the garage band where rock & roll began." As the final mixes were being prepared, Morrison took an extended trip to Paris, hoping to find his muse again in the City of Light. He was never to return: The singer died there in July 1971.
