Parlophone Records releases the fourth edition of David Bowie's "Loving The Alien (1983 - 1988)" box set, which documents Bowie's work since 1969 in lavish editions. "Loving The Alien (1983 - 1988)" is released as the successor to the award-winning and highly acclaimed David Bowie "Five Years (1969 - 1973)", David Bowie "Who Can I Be Now? (1974 - 1976)" and David Bowie "A New Career In A New Town (1977 - 1982)". One of the highlights is David Bowie's album "Loving The Alien (1983 - 1988)", which features a brand new production of 1987's "Never Let Me Down", completely reworked by Bowie's producer and sound engineer Mario McNulty. The album features contributions from Bowie's longtime collaborators Reeves Gabrels (guitar), David Torn (guitar), Sterling Campbell (drums), Tim Lefebvre (bass) and a string quartet with arrangements by Nico Muhly and a guest appearance by Laurie Anderson on "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)". The title of the 11-CD, 15-LP box set and digital download comes from the album's opening track "Tonight" (1984). The box set includes remastered versions of albums from Bowie's most commercially successful period: 'Let's Dance', 'Tonight', 'Never Let Me Down (original and 2018 versions)', the live album 'Glass Spider (Live Montreal '87)', the previously unreleased live album 'Serious Moonlight', an extensive collection of original remixes called 'Dance', and a compilation of non-album tracks, alternate versions, B-sides and soundtrack music called 'Re:Call 4'. Exclusive to the box set is a brand new production of the 1987 album "Never Let Me Down (2018)". The origins of this all-new version of the album date back to 2008, when Bowie asked Mario McNulty to remix "Time Will Crawl" and had Bowie's longtime drummer Sterling Campbell record new drums, as well as new string sections. The track appeared on the "iSelect" compilation and was met with positive reviews. In the liner notes for the album, Bowie noted: "Oh, they could redo the rest of the album!" In the spring of 2018, McNulty went into the Electric Ladyland studio in New York City with Sterling, Tim Lefebvre on bass, who also played in the band ★ ("Blackstar"), and Reeves Gabriel and David Torn on guitars. Each of these musicians had their own history with Bowie, and they made the perfect team for the new recording of an album that sounds like it's made up of brand new songs. The string arrangements were handled by Nico Muhly, who first met Mario in 2001 when they worked together for Philip Glass. The new recordings present "Never Let Me Down" as a particularly strong album with a somber thread running through it. Fans listening to "Never Let Me Down (2018)" will believe they are hearing a brand new, "lost" Bowie album. In addition, the 2018 version features newly "remixed" cover art that reflects the album's theme, and previously unreleased photos from the making of the cover, which come from the Greg Cormann archive. Each box configuration also includes the previously unreleased 1983 live album "Serious Moonlight", recorded in Montreal. Mixed by Bob Clearmountain at the time, the double album features Bowie on his most successful tour to date. The work includes images by photographer Denis O'Regan. In addition, the box set includes the double album "Glass Spider (Live Montreal '87)," which makes its vinyl debut exclusively in an LP box set. The innovative concert set and the fusion of music and theatre was a big inspiration for many bands in the 2000s. Speaking about The Glass Spider in 1991, Bowie said: "It was the first time I had the opportunity to put that kind of money into it and do those kinds of shows! At least for the first time since the Diamond Dogs... I thought, 'We're really going to spend the money this time! I remembered all the shattered dreams I had in the early seventies about what I could do with rock'n'roll." Also included in each of the boxes are the exclusive games "Re:Call 4" and "Dance". The former is a brand new compilation containing remastered single versions, non-album singles, album edits, B-sides and songs from soundtracks such as "Labyrinth", "Absolute BeginnersG and "When The Wind Blows". "Dance" features 12 contemporary remixes, some of which are being released on vinyl or CD for the first time. It is named after Bowie's unreleased remix album, which was originally scheduled for release in November 1985. The booklets of the physical box sets are 128 pages in the CD box and 84 pages in the vinyl box. They contain rarely exhibited and unpublished photographs by photographers such as Denis O'Regan, Greg Gorman, Herb Ritts and many others. Also included are reviews in the historical press and technical notes from then producers Nile Rodgers, Hugh Padgan, Mario McNulty and Justin Shirley-Smith. The CD box set contains faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the albums and the CDs will be gold in colour instead of the usual silver. The vinyl box set has the same contents as the CD box and is pressed on 180gram audiophile quality vinyl.
