Formed as an outgrowth of the Washington D.C. hardcore scene in the mid-80s with bands Dag Nasty and All of-credited as pioneers of the style, inspired by previous efforts by Descendents, Bad Religion and Faith. By the turn of the '90s, they helped define the sound of the Skate Punk subculture and were a major influence on the development of Emo Rock. The genre underwent a revival in the 2000s with acts like Rise Against, undergoing a distinct cross-pollination with Pop Punk, Emo and later Metalcore.
