Egon Wellesz was an Austrian composer, musicologist, and teacher who made significant contributions to the world of classical music in the 20th century. Born on October 21, 1885, in Vienna, he was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and also studied musicology with Guido Adler, becoming one of the first scholars to take an interest in the music of the Byzantine Rite. Wellesz composed in a variety of genres, including operas, symphonies, chamber music, and concertos.
