Brandon Flowers is nothing if not a folk storyteller. And lately, the most telling and compelling story he could tell is his own. "The weight has been lifted," says the singer and longtime rock 'n' roll dreamer, who on a recent morning finally eased the pain that has long colored his life. Flowers' story is one of escape and reconciliation. His platinum-selling band, The Killers, has long been the crew that represented all of Sin City - its glitz, its grandeur and its grime. But a few years ago, the singer needed to break free, and since his wife Tana had long suffered from PTSD, as a result, the family decided to move to Utah, where Tana grew up. Among the mountains, Flowers and his family finally felt at peace. Flowers calls this new season of life "the calm after the storm, a celebration of perseverance." And most importantly for fans of The Killers, the singer's newfound freedom resulted in the band's boldest, most Beatlesque and grandest album yet, Imploding the Mirage. Fans in the Czech Republic will get to see their favorite band next year when The Killers perform at the Colours of Ostrava festival, all of which has brought a certain euphoria deeply rooted in Flowers. "Some people talk about a unicorn walking into a room, or lightning striking when you're composing music. And on this recording session, I had those feelings and I got chills running down my spine listening to our new music," Flowers says of the new album, Imploding the Mirage. "Those are the moments when you really connect to the universe, and I know I'm lucky to have been a part of it so many times. "Imploding the Mirage is also the band's most collaborative effort yet. While Flowers, drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and multi-instrumentalist Mark Stoermer completed the bulk of the songwriting together, they found key partners in the dual production team of Shawn Everett (War on Drugs, Kacey Musgraves, Beck) and Jonathan Redo. "It felt different and kind of delightfully uncomfortable," Vannucci Jr. says of working with the two producers, who both pushed The Killers to expand beyond their original vision of a synth LP. "We kind of freed ourselves from a lot of the roadblocks and burdens that we had before," the drummer adds, "and things got really interesting. It was like a new path had opened up," Ronnie adds.
