Paul McCartney, 2012 After the success of the reissues of McCartney and McCartney II and winning a Grammy for Best Historical Album for Band on the Run, RAM, the next album in Paul McCartney's legendary catalogue, is out now. Originally released in May 1971, RAM is Paul's second self-titled album after The Beatles and the only one credited to Paul and Linda McCartney. The album was overshadowed at the time by the drama and worldwide media frenzy surrounding the breakup of the Beatles. It reached number one in the UK and number two in the US. Upon release, the album divided critics, but has since been acclaimed by fans and critics alike. Rolling Stone magazine, for example, raised its original rating to four stars. More recently, RAM's memory has been re-evaluated many times and has finally received recognition. Several tribute albums have even been released. The RAM book was written by Paul and Linda, mostly on their farm in Cape Kintyre, Scotland. In the fall of 1970, they flew to New York to record it. Since they didn't have a band, they auditioned several musicians and chose future Wings drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarists David Spinozza and Hugh McCracken, among others. The band completed an album in early 1971; also the songs "Another Day" and "Oh Woman, Oh Why", which were released together before RAM as Paul's first proper single after the Beatles and became a worldwide Top 5 hit. Reissues that include multiple CDs include these songs as bonus tracks. This album also earned Paul his first US number one hit with "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" as well as a Grammy Award for "Best Arrangement with Backing Vocals". When first released, RAM was also available in mono with alternate mixes, which at the time were only available to radio stations. This version is one of Paul McCartney's most sought-after collector's pieces to date. It will now be available on the market for the first time. Thrillington, the instrumental version of RAM, was released in 1977. It was recorded in 1971 at Abbey Road Studios in London and arranged by Richard Hewson. It was originally released under the pseudonym Percy "Thrills" Thrillington - an unknown eccentric celebrity who kept appearing in mysterious advertisements. In reality, the character of Percy was created by Paul and Linda. They were all about entertainment, and Paul had long wanted to record an orchestral album. The additional material consists of previously unreleased and exclusive footage, such as the brand new documentary "Ramming", narrated by Paul, and the original music videos for the songs "Heart Of The Country" and "3 Legs". The remastering was done at Abbey Road Studios; the same team that recently remastered the entire Beatles catalogue was involved.
