Countdown to Extinction is the fifth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth , released on July 14, 1992 by Capitol Records. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California from November 1991 to January 1992. It was the band's last album to feature guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 148,000 copies in its first week. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a quadruple platinum record for delivering four million copies in the United States. The album spawned four singles, "Skin o' My Teeth", "Symphony of Destruction", "Sweating Bullets" and "Foreclosure of a Dream". The album was well received by music critics. It was named the best album of 1992 by Kerrang! and Metal Hammer magazines. Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic called it "one of the most influential and successful metal albums of the 1990s" in a retrospective review.
