The album British Steel was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and number 34 on the Billboard 200. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping one million copies in the United States. British Steel is cited as one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time. The album's title track ranked fourth on VH1's "100 Greatest Metal Songs" and the album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
