Like the film itself, Carpenter's score stays true to the spirit of what made the 1978 original so great, while bringing it firmly into the present day. The music is unmistakably John Carpenter: the somber sounds of vintage synthesizers, the breathtaking sense of menace evoked by a few dissonant notes. But with a broader palette of sounds, new digital techniques and a deeper sense of music, the music for Halloween Kills is the work of a master who, even after nearly 50 years into his career, continues to push his creative boundaries and find new ways to thrill and frighten his fans. John Carpenter's hypnotic theme song for the 1978 horror masterpiece "Halloween" has come to embody the fear of slasher stalkers for generations of moviegoers, and has become so ingrained in pop culture that it has become a musical shorthand for the entire horror genre. It's just five notes strummed on a piano, arranged so sparsely that it comes across as a sketch, so simple that even an untrained player can easily master it, but it's one of cinema's greatest musical achievements. In 2018, Carpenter returned to the franchise he kicked off with his iconic work for the first time since Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), abandoning 40 years of sequels and reboots led by other filmmakers and returning to his original vision. While David Gordon Green took over directing the new "Halloween" film and its sequel, Carpenter stayed on to give them the distinctive sonic identity that belongs to "Halloween" as much as Michael Myers' death mask and shiny butcher knife.
