The album was produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic and has been described as a "disco album". The sound of the album has been compared to early Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. Music critics praised the album. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described the album as "a confident, stylish and danceable statement from a band just getting into its stride". The album was commercially successful, reaching number one in the United Kingdom and number three in the United States.
