The idea for this album came about when Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally realized that there were a lot of songs that never made it onto any of the band's six studio albums. In most cases, this was simply due to the concept of the individual works. The earliest song in this collection, "Rain in Numbers", dates from the band's formation in 2005. Other songs were written on tour or recorded during various sessions. Along with "Chariot" and "Baseball Diamond", the album features two previously unreleased songs that were written during the recording of "Depression Cherry" and "Thank Your Lucky Stars".
