Aretha Franklin's debut for the Atlantic label is one of the classic albums by an artist who can certainly be described as a soul diva par excellence. More than 75 million records sold speaks for itself. In 1987, she was the first woman to be inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame", in addition to winning a total of 18 !!!!! Grammy Awards to date. Incidentally, she also has the highest number of placements among female artists in the US Billboard chart. Impressive. And the album? An eruption of soul and R&B. Credit the capable backing band (legendary musicians from Muscle Shoals and Atlantic Studios), legendary producer Jerry Wexler, and an artist who sings soulfully and expressively and plays excellent piano. The album begins with the breakthrough hit "Respect" (which became a superhit for Otis Redding as well), followed by other great songs like the title track and the soulful "Do Right Woman - Do Right Man", great cover versions like Ray Charles' "Drown in My Tears" and Sam Cooke's "Good Times" to name just the highlights.
