The work, one of the most beautiful quartet works in the history of music, was written in America hard on the heels of the "New World" symphony. I wanted to write something very melodic and simple for once, and I always had Papa Haydn in my sights. The American critics showered it with praise: 'Why didn't Dvořák come here sooner if he could write such great music in America?' "No," I replied. The "American" Quartet and, perhaps even more so, the following Quartet, Op. 106, the first work Dvořák composed after his return from America, are matters of the heart for the young Pavel Haas Quartet.
