The album was a return to the band's hard rock roots and was commercially successful, reaching number three on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the US Billboard 200. The lead single from the album, "Stiff Upper Lip", reached the top ten of the charts in the UK and Australia. Critics praised the album, with AllMusic calling it a "triumphant return to form" and stating that "the band sounds like they're having fun again".
