Born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and a cousin of Dionne Warwick. Whitney Houston's career took off after she signed with Arista Records in 1983. Her self-titled debut album "Whitney Houston" (1985) immediately catapulted her to fame with hit singles like "Saving All My Love for You" and "How Will I Know."
