Herbert von Karajan was an Austrian conductor who is widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. Born on April 5, 1908, in Salzburg, he showed prodigious musical talent from a young age. Karajan's career spanned over five decades during which he conducted many of the world's leading orchestras and made an extensive number of recordings. He was particularly associated with the Berlin Philharmonic, where he served as principal conductor for 34 years from 1955 until his death in 1989.
