Aretha Franklin, often referred to as the "Queen of Soul," was an iconic American singer, songwriter, and pianist whose career spanned several decades, beginning in the late 1950s. Born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, she was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she began singing gospel music at her father's church. Franklin's powerful voice and emotional delivery quickly garnered attention, and by 1961 she had signed with Columbia Records.
