Gazel (from Arabic ghazal = spider's web) is a medieval lyrical hymn form originating in Arabic poetry. It owes its final form and dissemination to Persian poets, especially Shaykh Sa'dī and subsequently Hafiz of Shiraz. The form usually consists of 5 to 15 couplets with a single, identical meter and a single, identical rhyme in even verse. The rhyme progression scheme can be expressed as follows: aa ba ca da... xa.
