MAINTENANCE OF RECORDS AND TURNTABLES

Probably everyone knows the crackling sound when playing phonograph records. We often blame it on the age of the records. In most cases, however, it is a dirty record or a dirty cartridge. The crackling is caused by
dirt and dust attracted to the surface of the record by static electricity.

Thorens cleaner is used to clean the surfaces of gramophone records. It removes dirt from the surface and removes the electrostatic charge from the record, reducing the rate at which dirt builds up on
its surface. A clean and high quality sound is ensured by a clean stylus tip. Once the sound quality and clarity of the sound is no longer good, the tip of the cartridge must be cleaned. Dirtying the stylus tip is shown in the pictures.

For cleaning the stylus tip, Thorens cleaning agent is used to dissolve deposits around the stylus tip. A special brush, which Thorens also offers, is then used to remove the dissolved buildup from the tip.
The contamination to which the plates and the pickups are exposed significantly reduces their lifetime and consequently the sound quality. The picture shows a detail of the wear on the record groove.
