The New Stan Getz Quartet

The New Stan Getz Quartet

Jazz Ensemble Channeling the Legacy of Legendary Saxophonist

The New Stan Getz Quartet was a jazz ensemble led by the renowned tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, who was one of the prime movers of the cool jazz movement. Stan Getz, born on February 2, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had a prolific career that spanned several decades. He was known for his smooth, lyrical playing style and his ability to blend with other musicians seamlessly. The New Stan Getz Quartet featured Gary Burton on vibraphone, Gene Cherico on bass (though Steve Swallow later replaced him), and Roy Haynes on drums. This particular lineup was notable for its 1964 live album "Getz Au Go Go," which was recorded at the Café Au Go Go in New York City and featured Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto. The album is celebrated for its bossa nova rhythms and was indicative of Getz's significant role in popularizing Brazilian music in the United States. While "Manhã de Carnaval" is a famous Brazilian song from the film "Black Orpheus," it is not clear if The New Stan Getz Quartet released an album by that name; however, the song has been covered by many artists and is often associated with bossa nova and jazz repertoires. Stan Getz's career continued to flourish until his death on June 6, 1991, leaving behind a legacy as one of jazz's most talented and influential tenor saxophonists.
