Pioneering Spoken Word and Political Poets from the Civil Rights Era

The Last Poets are a group of poets and musicians who emerged from the late 1960s African American civil rights movement's black nationalist thread. Their work is characterized by politically charged raps and rhythmic accompaniments, making them one of the earliest precursors to modern hip-hop music. The group was formed on May 19, 1968—the birthday of Malcolm X—by poets Gylan Kain, David Nelson, and Felipe Luciano in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) in Harlem. Abiodun Oyewole, Umar Bin Hassan, Suliaman El-Hadi, Jalal Mansur Nuriddin, and others joined in later years.
