16th-Century German Composer and Lutheran Chorale Founder

Johann Walter, born Johann Blankenmüller (1496 – 1570), was a Lutheran composer and poet during the Reformation period, known for his close collaboration with Martin Luther. Walter is often recognized as the primary force in developing the Lutheran chorale tradition, which became a significant element of Christian worship. He served as the cantor in Torgau and later in Dresden, where he worked on the first Protestant hymnal, "Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn," published in 1524. This hymnal included compositions by Walter and harmonizations of Luther's hymns.
