19th-Century French Classical Composer and Pianist

George Onslow (1784–1853) was a French composer of British descent who is best known for his chamber music, particularly his string quartets and quintets. Born in Clermont-Ferrand to an English father and a French mother, Onslow enjoyed a privileged upbringing that allowed him to pursue his musical interests. Although he initially studied piano, he later focused on composition. His work was well-regarded by his contemporaries, and he was often referred to as the "French Beethoven."
