François Roberday

François Roberday

François Roberday (1624–1680) was a French Baroque composer and organist. Not much is known about his life, but he is remembered for his contribution to the music of the period, particularly for his collection of "Fugues et Caprices." This work, published in 1660, consists of twelve pairs of fugues and caprices for the organ or harpsichord and is considered an important example of French Baroque keyboard music. Roberday's "Fugues et Caprices" are notable for their contrapuntal complexity and stylistic blend of French and Italian influences. Although he did not have a prolific output, Roberday's work has been recognized for its craftsmanship and has earned him a place in the history of Baroque music. His compositions are occasionally performed and recorded today by early music specialists seeking to explore lesser-known repertoire from the 17th century.
