Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch

Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch

1970s Disco Group

Celi Bee, born in New York, is an American singer of Puerto Rican origin, who became popular during the heyday of Disco. Although born in New York, as a child Celida returned to Puerto Rico with her parents. There she met and married Pepe Luis Soto, with whom she formed a duo with moderate success in the 60's. The duo, which lasted until the early 70's, was named Celine y Pepe Luis. In 1972, Celine won first place in the Festival De La Voz y La Cancion with "Yo Quiero Un Painter." Shortly after, she and her husband moved to Britain. There, Celine recorded a single titled Half A Love, which had great success in Puerto Rico but had a great impact in England. In 1977, the beginning of the Disco era, Pepe got his wife to record an album called Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch on T.K. Records. Of the six tracks included on the album, two became hit singles: "Superman" and "One Love". In 1978, the album Alternating Currents brought the biggest hit of her career as a singer: "Macho (A Real Real One)". The album cover also contained a photo of Celi, a version which contrasted with the androgynous womanhood of the vocals. In 1978, she would record her third album, "Fly Me On The Wings Of Love", with two songs written by her, "Boomerang" and "Can't Let You Go" "Blow My Mind", 1979 was her last major work and at the time of release, she divorced Pepe. He recorded some songs during the 80's, but nothing reprising their old hits. The band of Celi Bee, The Buzzy Bunch, was composed only by Pepe Soto and his studio musicians.
