Venom is an English extreme metal band formed in 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Venom's first two albums, Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982), were released at the tail end of the new wave of British heavy metal and are widely regarded as a major influence on the thrash metal and extreme metal genres. Venom's second album, Black Metal, proved so influential that it was used as the name for the eponymous subgenre of extreme metal. The band's classic line-up of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon recorded two more studio albums, At War With Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985), and a live album, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1986). They are often cited by bands such as Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost and Mayhem as one of their main influences and are one of the most respected bands of their generation. Venom is still led by original singer and bassist Cronos, who headlines festivals around the world and continues to release new music. Sons Of Satan is a collection of the band's early demo material from 1979 to 1983.
