Wilhelm Backhaus, who won the important Anton Rubinstein Competition in Paris in 1905 at the age of 21, is undoubtedly one of the most important pianists of the 20th century. After the Second World War he limited his repertoire to selected piano works by the great masters Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Schubert, Haydn and Schumann. The three piano recitals included here from 1953 (Ordensaal Schloss Ludwigsburg), 1959 (Liederhalle Stuttgart) and 1962 (Liederhalle Stuttgart) show the pianist as a mature artist.
