A number of world-class guitarists gathered to celebrate the legendary guitarist's 60th birthday with the release of "The Loner". Guitarists Brett Garsed and T.J. Helmerich open the album in a way that is powerful and joyous at the same time, somewhat somber but definitely in the spirit of Beck. Alex Gunia takes a turn for the fusion in his more than seven-minute guest appearance, while guitar duo Richie Kotzen & Greg Howe then step up and celebrate some proper jazz-rock. Ray Russell contributes his own dreamy "Snow," also nearly seven minutes long and a delight to hear on an endless loop, and the Fernado Pareta Trio gives a very sensitive interpretation of "Brush With The Blues," the only track on the album written by Jeff Beck. One of the best 13 cuts on "The Loner" album. Pareta has Beck in his fingers. But don't let him tell you everything. "The Loner" is an album with many other highlights, such as Scott Henderson's "Song Holy Hall," Derek Sherinian's virtuoso cover of Jan Hammer's "Star Cycle" and Keith More's super-perfect "Farewell," that do the birthday boy proud. You should "pull it off" yourself at your leisure. Worth it.
