On 14 March 1926, a special concert was held in the Leipzig Community Synagogue at the corner of Gottsched-/Zentralstraße. Leipzig citizens and guests, regardless of religion, were invited to gather their own impressions of Jewish culture. They were given the opportunity to meet, discover similarities and experience differences as mutual enrichment. In this way, the organizers tried to reach out even to those who had perhaps never entered a Jewish house of prayer in their lives and had reservations about it: the synagogue concerts were naturally intended to attract a broader audience, and the doors of the synagogue were open wide to everyone, not just members of the congregation. Great names such as Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn were combined with masterpieces of synagogue music. The Leipzig audience now suddenly heard works by Salomone Rossi, Louis Lewandowski and, of course, the cantor of the time, Samuel Lampel. This CD by the Leipzig Synagogue Choir, recorded with numerous guests, reconstructs the programme of this concert and brings to life a piece of Leipzig's history - from a time when music of Jewish and Christian origin was combined, performed by a choir of the time across denominational lines. The power of music thus unites. And it rewards participants and listeners for their openness and tolerance of the "unknown" with amazing musical discoveries. With the recording of this concert programme, Ludwig Böhme and the Leipzig Synagogue Choir want to show what sonic results this uncomplicated and pragmatic coexistence between Jews and non-Jews has led to - a "sounding tolerance" that can still be inspiring today!
