The Concerto for the Yellow River is one of the most famous Chinese works. With its richly coloured melodies, it highlights the picturesque diversity: the splendour of the landscape through which the river flows, but also the struggle of man against the terrible force of nature. Here he symbolically represents the alien invaders and is victoriously defeated in the finale. The work is also a powerful expression of patriotic pride. The violin concerto 'Butterfly Lovers', composed in 1958 by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao, won worldwide acclaim for its moving and beautiful synthesis of Western and Eastern traditions. In the version for piano and orchestra that Chen Gang arranged in 1958, it can now be heard on this recording with the outstanding internationally acclaimed soloist Chen Jie.
