Brazilian music has traditionally played an important role in the releases of the Soul Jazz label. One of the first connections between London and Sugarloaf that Stuart Baker & Co. made was the compilation "Brasil" released in 1994. It quickly became a key release for the label, but hasn't been available since 1998. Ten songs have been digitally remastered for the 2018 reissue. It was recorded in Rio de Janeiro with outstanding and respected Brazilian artists such as Sivuca (accordion, guitar), Raul de Souza (trombone) and Joyce Moreno (vocals). The impetus for the release of the sampler was the hype around music from Brazil that swept the British capital in the early 1990s. This was thanks in part to obsessive connoisseurs of the South American sound, such as DJs and label owners Gilles Peterson (Acid Jazz, Talkin' Loud) and Joe Davis (Far Out Records), who organised concerts in London by bossa nova legend Joyce Moreno, where she and her husband, drummer Tutty Moreno, performed to 2,000 enthusiastic young people. It was through Moreno's contacts and involvement in the "Brasil" project that Baker and Davis were able to make the recordings in Rio happen.
