After the Sugarhill Gang brought the rhythmic, rhyming chanting of the Harlem and Bronx backyards to light with their megahit "Rapper's Delight" in September 1979, countless artists and producers have tried to match this charming trio. By the end of the year, about 30 more hip-hop singles were released by small New York independent labels. This is where the second installment of the "Boombox" series comes in. The compilation builds on the breakthrough made in the 1970s by pioneering African-American DJs like Kool Herc, DJ Hollywood, Grandmaster Flash, Eddie Cheba and Afrika Bambaataa with two turntables and breakbeats in the original thicket of disco, soul, blues and R'n'B, and features second-wave artists like Paul Winley, Peter Brown and Joe Robinson. They were some of the first hip hop artists to go into the studio and record their rap tracks on vinyl. As is typical of Soul Jazz, the release is accompanied by a lavish booklet with extensive and exclusive contextual material.
