Although the album is initially somewhat difficult to approach, its hidden depths only become apparent after repeated listens. Since then, the hidden and sometimes somewhat difficult approach have been considered hallmarks of the band's sound. At the beginning of the recording of Seventeen Seconds, The Cure replaced their bassist. Michael Dempsey was replaced by Simon Gallup, whose bass playing was to change and shape the whole atmosphere of the music. The band had found their signature sound that made them famous around the world.
