Whereas earlier E.M. albums were characterized by a limited live sound, Out of Time offers more sonic diversity, including strings, keyboards, mandolins and guests like rapper KRS-One and Kate Pierson (B-52's). The sunny blend of pop and folk is as refreshing as Michael Stipe's decision to forgo explicitly political lyrics in favor of a more personal approach. The album features some classic R.E.M. tracks - including Losing My Religion - but the album stands out more for its production than its songwriting. The abbreviation UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development between Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and Hong Kong's Audio Quality CD Company. Unlike conventional CDs, UHQCDs are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratches, an additional layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The result of this combination is a significant reduction in laser light reflection inside the CD and an unparalleled precise edge transition between the pits and the CD soils. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with conventional CD players. Musically, the result is a sound image strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes. In addition, the discs offered by Universal Japan are encoded with MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology. By outputting a digital signal from the digital output of a CD player or a previously ripped data stream from a music server to the appropriate MQA-DA converter, you can generate a 24-bit signal from CD data with a sampling rate of up to 352 Khz. While Universal Music Japan's first series of UHQCDs used DSD data from previous SHM-SACD releases, with its growing popularity, albums that were not previously released as SHM-SACDs are now appearing. Universal Archive master tapes are usually converted to DSD and then processed using the appropriate MQA encoder. This makes UHQCDs ideal for music lovers who want to get as close to the sound of the recording as possible but don't own a SACD player.
