Eponymous is the debut studio album by American rock band R.E.M. , released on October 10, 1988 by I.R.S. Records. The album was recorded over six weeks in August and September 1988 and was produced by R.E.M. and Scott Litt. Eponymous contains the band's first three singles, "Radio Free Europe", "The One I Love" and "Stand". The album was critically and commercially successful, peaking at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 chart and earning a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
