The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien, who produced Pearl Jam 's first two albums, Ten and Vs. The album was recorded from February to September 2019 at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. The album is the band's first studio album in seven years, since 2009's Backspacer. The album's title refers to the band's intention to bridge the gap between their early work and more recent material.
