On Metacritic, the album received a score of 73 out of a possible 100 based on 9 reviews. AllMusic gave the album 4 stars out of 5, writing that "McCartney is in great form throughout Egypt Station, delivering a set of songs that are both melodic and thought-provoking". The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 153,000 units sold, 147,000 of which were pure album sales. It is McCartney's first album to debut at number one in the United States.
