Twelve", the long-awaited new album by American singer-songwriter Patti Smith, will be released in April 2007. On her new album she interprets classic rock and pop songs. Patti Smith, whose debut album "Horses" was released in 1975, will also be inducted into the famous "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame" in 2007. "Twelve" follows her last studio album "trampin'" (2004) and is the first Patti Smith album to consist entirely of new interpretations of other artists' songs. For "Twelve", Patti Smith and her band - Lenny Kaye (guitar), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums) and Tony Shanahan (bass, keys) - recorded a number of well-known and lesser-known pop and rock songs, including Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise", Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and Neil Young's "Helpless". "Twelve" also features songs by Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers and Paul Simon. Smith and her band are backed on "Twelve" by a number of prominent and personally well-known musicians, including Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima and banjo-playing playwright Sam Shepard (Smith appeared with him on stage in his 1971 play "Cowboy Mouth"), Greenwich Village folk musicians John Cohen (banjo) and Peter Stampfel (fiddle), who were especially active in the early 1960s. In the early 2000s, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes, who plays slide guitar and dulcimer, and hip-hop producer Luis Resto (Eminem) on keyboards. Patti Smith's daughter Jesse and her son Jackson contributed guitar and vocal parts. In 2005, Patti Smith was awarded the French Order of Culture "Des Arts Et Des Lettres" in Paris. The French Minister of Culture honored rock poet Smith as "one of the most influential female rock and pop artists". Smith is considered a connoisseur and a passionate admirer of French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891). Patti Smith is one of five artists, performers and musical groups inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007 (the other honorees are R.E.M., Van Halen, the Ronettes and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five). Patti Smith's induction ceremony will take place on March 12 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Her pioneering, purist vision of "three chords and the power of words" has long since secured her place in rock 'n' roll history. Throughout her career, Smith has repeatedly interpreted the works of other artists. From her first single, "Hey Joe" (1974), and versions of Van Morrison's "Gloria" and Chris Kenner's "Land Of 1, 000 Dances" on her debut album, Horses (1975), to live versions of "You Light Up My Life" and "My Generation" and her new album, Artist, songwriter and musician Patti Smith is known for reimagining songs from the classic pop-rock canon and giving them a new quality all her own.
