Treasures from the archives: Neil Young Live at Carnegie Hall 1970 In recent years, Neil Young fans have enjoyed a number of previously unreleased recordings from the Canadian singer-songwriter's archive, including the albums "Hitchhiker" (1976) and "Homegrown" (1975) and live recordings such as "Way Down In The Rust Bucket" (1990). In 2021, Young, along with Shakey Pictures Records and Reprise Records, announced the release of the first album in a new series, "The Neil Young Official Bootleg Series": the 1970 Carnegie Hall concert album. The title reveals that this is a recording of his first performance at the famous New York concert hall on December 4, 1970. There were two performances at Carnegie Hall, one on the evening of December 4 and the other at midnight. According to Young, the first performance was by far the best. "When I first stepped on the stage of Carnegie Hall, it took my breath away," he said. The collection, which is available on a double-CD or double-LP, includes a total of 23 songs from his time in Buffalo Springfield and from his first solo albums, as well as others that were not recorded and released in the studio at the time. The concert's generous setlist covers one of the most acclaimed periods of Young's career, with lighter versions of "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," "Down By The River," "Helpless" and "Sugar Mountain," as well as "After The Goldrush" from the album of the same name, which was released just nine weeks before the concert. Neil even played the poignant songs "Bad Fog Of Loneliness", "Old Man" and "See The Sky About To Rain" before they were recorded and released. "Carnegie Hall 1970" is thus an album full of gems. The full track list can be found below. "This recording - Carnegie Hall, December 4, 1970 - is very special to me," says Young. "The changes happen quickly. When I was going through those early bootlegs [...] there was a change, something you could hear - an evolution. [...] At Carnegie Hall, I was listening to a new song about my ranch that I just moved to - 'Old Man. Time flies."
