"The Millennium Bell is Mike Oldfield's twentieth album, originally released in 1999. The theme of the album is a reflection on three different periods of human history. The album title is inspired by the dawn of the third millennium and Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" albums. "Millennium Performance" on the second half of the album is from a concert on New Year's Eve 1999 in Berlin, which took place in front of an audience of approximately 500,000 people. Oldfield recorded most of the album at his home studio, Roughwood Studios in Berkshire. Orchestration then followed in one day with the London Session Orchestra at London's Abbey Road studios. It was Oldfield's third album in a single year, following "Tubular Bells III" in late 1998 and "Guitars" in early 1999. The album blends many styles, from majestic choruses and soundtrack orchestral passages to modern song structures and folk sounds to the powerful pulse of electronic percussion.
