"American Life" is the lead single and title track of Madonna's ninth studio album. The pop, techno and folk lyrics contain the singer's political and religious views, which challenge the superficiality of modern life and the illusion of the American Dream, especially during the George W. Bush presidency. Because "American Life" touches on the sore spots of American society, it stirred up American listeners, but was harshly criticized by critics and the single only reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside the US, however, the single was very successful, reaching the top of the charts in Canada, Denmark, Italy, Japan and Switzerland, and number two in the UK.
