With these two iconic classical works in first-class performances, Reference Recordings once again presents a superb audiophile recording by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Manfred Honeck. In the accompanying booklet, the conductor outlines the history of both works and his artistic approach. The Eroica was Beethoven's bold departure from earlier symphonies. His pupil Ferdinand Ries wrote: "Beethoven played it (the Eroica) for me recently and I think that heaven and earth must tremble at its performance." William Caballero, as soloist, gave a masterful performance of Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1. In an interview with Manfred Honeck, also recorded in the booklet, he revealed his views on the history and performance of the concerto.
