This box is not to be missed by any country music lover, as it contains all the recordings of the ten LPs Johnny Cash released between 1957 and 1960. You can read about the "man in black" with the distinctive bass-baritone voice, named after his black clothes, in many books: his influence on the development of country music, his drug addiction and decades-long love affair with his wife June Carter, his worldwide career and countless awards. These CDs, however, are not about biographical details but, of course, about the music of a singer-songwriter who, for the sake of commerce, had to sing in German like the Beatles and many other artists. Like many of his musical contemporaries Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins, with whom he later toured, Johnny Cash began his career at the legendary Sun Studios. Nearly 60 years ago, it was there that he wrote such famous songs as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I walk the line", which are in the repertoire of almost every young guitarist. This box not only contains early, still rockabilly titles like "Get Rhythm," but also Cash's tribute to country star Hank Williams, gospel songs and, of course, all the hits from the early years. Despite major drug problems, Johnny Cash's lifelong commitment to the exploited and oppressed was evident in many of his critical song lyrics. On these CDs we hear how and why Johnny Cash became country music's biggest star.
