Very British: Blues virtuoso Joe Bonamassa's new album for 2020 The 33-year-old New York State guitarist was influenced by his father's vinyl collection as a child, which included albums by Eric Clapton, Cream, the Jeff Beck Group and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. These British blues influences shaped him and made him the musician he is today. "I must have been about 12 years old when I first heard the sound and I was immediately taken with it. I knew right away that I wanted to be the same," Joe recalls. "This whole London adventure," Bonamassa admits, "was a big wish come true for me." Joe co-wrote the ten songs with a host of English musical greats, including former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, former Cream lyricist Pete Brown and pianist Jools Holland. "Writing songs for this album in England was the right thing to do," Bonamassa muses. "It sounds inherently British. Bernie and I would play each other's sets. We're cut from the same cloth. All you had to do was ask Bernie: "What would the British do?" And he came up with all these chord changes and I just thought: "Oh, that's the sound. You get all the typical melodies that way." His longtime producer Kevin Shirley, as well as his musicians Anton Fig (drums), Michael Rhodes (bass) and Reese Wynans (keyboards) then came to London to record. Eventually Joe released the album he had dreamed of from the beginning.
