Jethro Tull, fronted by charismatic flautist Ian Anderson, are still an extraordinary phenomenon on the rock scene. After relatively bluesy beginnings in their founding phase around 1968, when Jethro Tull emerged from the John Evan Band and McGregor's Engine, they quickly developed into an original progressive rock band that moved quite naturally between classical influences, folk and hard rock. Since their first gig at London's Marquee Club, they have released 30 studio and live albums, selling 60 million copies worldwide. Jethro Tull have toured 54 times around the world and are still considered the only rock band whose style is defined by the flute. Following 1970's Thick As A Brick, the Benefit Collector's Edition is now out with more rarities, single versions and radio recordings. After Jethro Tull's three American tours in 1969 had secured them a breakthrough on the other side of the Atlantic, Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Clive Bunker, Glenn Cornick and John Evan went into the studio in December 1969 and January 1970 to record a third Benefit album with producer Terry Ellis that was rockier than ever. It reached #3 in the UK and #7 in the US and brought Jethro Tull to the Isle of Wight Festival, where the band performed to over half a million people. John Evans, who was featured as a guest musician on the recordings, remained in the group as a permanent member, while Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond , who had already played on some songs, took over as bassist from 1971.
