Insomniac is the fifth studio album by American punk rock band Green Day , released on October 10, 1995 by Reprise Records. After a long touring cycle in support of 1994's Dookie, the band began work on Insomniac in early 1995. Produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day , the album was recorded over three weeks at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. The album's themes include insomnia, anger and alienation. Musically, Insomniac is a punk rock album that contains elements of alternative rock and pop punk. The album was commercially successful, placing second on the Billboard 200 chart and earning triple platinum from the Recording Industry Association of America. Critical reception of Insomniac has been mixed but mostly positive. Some reviewers felt that the album was a step down from the band's previous work, while others praised the band for experimenting with new sounds. Singles from the album were moderately successful, with the tracks "Brain Stew" and "Jaded" reaching the top ten of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
