After the huge success of Foxtrot and the fact that they had a reputation for playing medium-sized venues, Genesis needed only one more truly successful album to put them in the company of their peers like Yes and King Crimson. It was time to raise their potential again. Surprisingly, they did it by making a comeback. Their work has always had a pastoral yearning and a sense of wanting to return to a bygone era. Their leaning towards this surrealist form of nostalgia no doubt stems from their Charterhouse school background, but after Foxtrot's somewhat obscure statements about the end of the world, it was a sense of losing the old order that translated into sales..... Hence the title. The album's opening track, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, perfectly encapsulates what Genesis were about at the time. Its folk roots gradually morphed into Elgar-esque jazz-rock grandeur as the band finally captured their true sound on vinyl. Even there, the haunting atmosphere of Edwardian ghosts can still be felt. By this time, Collins' jazz-rock drums were turning their sets into much livelier songs, such as the second half of "Cinema Show," in which Gabriel's love of T.S. Eliot comes to the fore. It's all much cleverer and still manages not to be too pushy, despite the use of words like "undynal" in "Firth Of Fifth" (puns still to come). It also allowed Gabriel to don an even more outrageous stage wardrobe. Hackett's work on the latter album is fantastic, his sound now entirely his own; a rare feat in rock indeed. Even Gabriel's flute now sounds polished. Only "Battle in Epping Forest" seemed out of place, its comedic values at odds with the violent subject matter. Banks plays much more piano here, and the synths came into play, as in the aforementioned "Cinema Show." On top of that, the single "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" finally made it to the singles chart with its tale of small-town eccentricity. It seemed the world was finally ready for Genesis.
