The album was recorded at the famous Abbey Road studios and produced by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford. The album was a commercial success and reached number three in the UK Albums Chart. The album was awarded a UK Phonographic Industry Gold Certificate for selling over 100,000 copies. The album opens with "The Cinema Show", a ten-minute epic full of lush orchestration and powerful vocals. The song was written by Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks and is one of the band's best-known songs. The album's title track, 'Selling England By The Pound', is a rock anthem full of energy, with Steve Hackett displaying some of his most impressive guitar work.
