The Art of Restraint Elvis Presley achieved almost everything during his extensive, if brief, career. The one thing the King of Rock 'n' Roll never got was the chance to record an album with an orchestra. According to his wife Priscilla, Elvis was a big fan of opera and classical music. But his label forbade him from producing such a record. In 2015, Elvis Presley would have turned 80 years old, and what was denied to him during his lifetime has now been posthumously realised: 'If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra' is the title of Elvis Presley's new orchestral album. For this album, the London-based band, together with producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick, selected a total of 14 songs from the music legend's repertoire, which they then re-recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios. Elvis fans need not worry, however, as the original recordings remain mostly intact despite the orchestral accompaniment. This means that only the orchestral parts have been added to the tracks, rather than, as with comparable products, the vocal track has been isolated and the original instrumentation removed. And for an orchestra, this is the same art as completely re-arranging a piece. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London succeeds brilliantly. The musicians are further supported by, among others, Canadian singer Michael Bublé, who sings a "duet" with Elvis Presley, and the Italian opera trio Il Volo, which also performs a song on the album. The result is a new, very special compilation of Elvis songs that includes relatively obscure tracks like 1973's "Steamroller Blues" and the ballad "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind", as well as some big hits like "In The Ghetto", "Love Me Tender", "Fever" and "Can't Help Falling In Love". The first single released from the album was the eponymous song "If I Can Dream", a plea for a better world, which Presley sang as the closing number of his legendary 1968 comeback special. New yet close to the original, "If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" is a spectacular combination of classic arrangements and legendary Elvis songs. You've never heard the King of Rock 'n' Roll like this before.
